With a duration of 24 months and 360 hours of work, the Professional Master’s Degree has two lines of research: Socioeconomics and Sustainability in Mining and Sustainable Use of Biological Resources.
The main objectives of the Graduate Program are:
- To provide a systemic and integrated view of the use of natural resources;
- To train professionals capable of facing the challenges of using natural resources and meeting society’s new demands for sustainable development;
- To contribute to the generation of technological innovation based on a systemic vision of the sustainability of natural resources.

Silvio Ramos
PhD in Soil Science
Silvio Ramos holds a PhD and a master’s degree in soil science, and a degree in Agronomy. As a researcher at ITV DS, he is a professor and coordinator of the graduate program in Sustainable Use of Natural Resources at ITV DS, as well as a lecturer at the Federal Rural University of Amazonia (UFRA). He works on the propagation and growth of native species, the recovery of mined areas, bioindicators, and soil carbon stocks. He teaches subjects related to forest restoration.

She completed a postdoctoral research at the University of California, Santa Barbara. PhD in Environmental Sciences
Douglas Ferreira holds a PhD in Environmental Sciences and is a meteorologist with experience at CENSIPAM and INFRAERO. Since 2012, he has been a researcher at ITV DS, responsible for research on atmospheric monitoring, regional numerical modeling for mining, nowcasting with weather radar, and studies on atmospheric discharges. He also works on landslide susceptibility, socio-climatic risk, precipitation forecasts, and climate change. He is an external collaborator in the Professional Master’s Degree in Sustainable Use of Natural Resources at ITV DS.

He has a degree in Agronomy. As a researcher at ITV DS in the area of recovery of degraded areas, he is dedicated to monitoring and developing bioindicators. He also works as a collaborating lecturer at the Federal University of Viçosa (UFV) and the Federal University of Pará (UFPA). His research includes biodiversity patterns, restoration ecology, soil-plant interactions, and the dynamics of the Atlantic Forest.

Gabriel Salomão

Gabriel Salomão holds a PhD in Mineralogy and Geochemistry from the Federal University of Pará (UFPA), a master’s degree in the same field, and a bachelor’s degree in Geology, also from UFPA, including an academic exchange at the University of Adelaide, Australia.
He has been an adjunct researcher at the Vale Institute of Technology Sustainable Development (ITV DS) since 2021, coordinating the Geochemical Background of the Iron Quadrangle project.
He has experience in environmental geochemistry, geochemical mapping and background studies, geochemical prospecting, applied statistics, geoprocessing, and remote sensing. Salomão was a research fellow at ITV and participated in international cooperation with the UNESCO International Center on Global-Scale Geochemistry in China. He worked as a trainee at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), Australia, where he conducted research using portable spectroscopic techniques on drones. He has also carried out laboratory activities in U-Pb geochronology (LA-ICP-MS) with the TRaX group.

Marcio Silva
PhD in Environmental Sciences
Marcio Silva holds a PhD in Environmental Sciences from the Federal University of Pará (UFPA), a master’s degree in Geology and Geochemistry, and a bachelor’s degree in Geology, along with a specialization in Geology and Marine Geophysics. He works in the fields of geology, marine geophysics, coastal geomorphology, oceanography, and hydrology, with an emphasis on morphodynamics, hydrodynamics, and environmental impacts assessments and diagnostics.
He has been working as an assistant researcher at ITV DS since 2016, focusing on bathymetric surveys, hydrodynamic measurements, and environmental analysis.
Previously, he was a researcher at the Institute of Scientific and Technological Research of the State of Amapá, where he coordinated programs on coastal management and aquatic ecosystems dynamics. He also has teaching experience at various universities, delivering courses in Geology, Hydrology, Remote Sensing, and Environmental Management.

Paulo Pontes
PhD in Water Resources and Environmental Sanitation
Paulo Pontes holds a PhD in Water Resources and Environmental Sanitation from the Hydraulic Research Institute (IPH) at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS).
He works as an adjunct researcher at ITV DS, developing projects in hydrology, hydrological modeling, climate change, geoprocessing, and remote sensing, with a focus on the Amazon region and the river basins of southeastern Brazil.
He is a professor in the Professional Master’s Degree in Sustainable Use of Natural Resources in Tropical Regions at ITV DS. He has teaching experience at the University of Vale do Sinos (Unisinos) and has worked as a consultant on river basin plans and hydroelectric sector projects, contributing to the sustainable management of water resources.

Renato Silva Júnior
PhD in Environmental Sciences
Renato Silva Júnior holds a PhD in Environmental Sciences, a master’s degree in Geology and Geochemistry, and is a geologist who graduated from the Geosciences Institute of the Federal University of Pará (UFPA).
Since 2012, he has worked as an adjunct researcher at ITV DS, coordinating the monitoring of the Itacaiúnas River Basin. He is also a permanent professor in the Professional Master’s Degree in Sustainable Use of Natural Resources in Tropical Regions, dedicating himself to teaching, research, and academic supervision.
With over 20 years of experience in Environment and Water Resources, he has worked at the Ministry of the Environment’s Water Resources Secretariat, contributing to pilot projects, technical support, and working groups within the National Water Resources Council.
He has taught at various institutions, including UFPA, the University of Brasília (UnB), and the University Center of Brasília (UniCEUB). He also worked for eight years at Golder Associates Brazil in the environmental and mining sectors.

Tasso Guimarães
PhD in Geology and Geochemistry
Tasso Guimarães holds a PhD and a master’s degree in Geology from the Federal University of Pará, and a degree in Oceanography from the same university.
As a researcher at ITV DS since 2012, he has worked on fluvial-lacustrine stratigraphy, environmental geochemistry, applied palynology, and social perception of hydrological risks. He studies ecological transitions, critical species, and vulnerable communities, with a focus on Amazonian territories impacted by mining. Guimarães uses transdisciplinary and multiproxy approaches to socio-environmental diagnostics and sustainable planning.
He is an editor and reviewer for international journals and a professor in the Professional Master’s Degree in Sustainable Use of Natural Resources at ITV, having coordinated the program from 2019 and 2021.

Carolina Carvalho holds a PhD in Ecology and Biodiversity from São Paulo State University (UNESP), a master’s degree in Ecology and Evolution from the Federal University of Goiás (UFG), and a degree in Biological Sciences from UNESP. As a researcher at ITV DS, she investigates how landscape structure, human activities, and intraspecific variation influence ecological processes such as pollination and seed dispersal. Carvalho uses barcoding, metabarcoding, geotechnologies, and statistical methods to monitor species and understand ecological interactions.
She was an intern at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and at the Research Centre in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources (CIBIO) in Portugal.

As a full researcher at ITV DS, she leads the Biodiversity and Environmental Solutions group. A lecturer and advisor in graduate programs at various institutions, she has experience in phylogenetic systematics, taxonomy, mastozoology, ecology, and conservation, with a focus on bats (Chiroptera), geographic diversity, faunal monitoring, and community ecology analyses.

Rafael de Fraga holds a PhD in Ecology from the National Institute for Amazonian Research (INPA), a master’s degree in Ecology, and a degree in Biological Sciences from the Positivo University Center. He completed a sandwich doctorate at Macquarie University, Australia, and a postdoctoral fellowship at the Federal University of Western Pará (UFOPA) and ITV DS. He is an assistant researcher at ITV DS, with experience in herpetology, ecological diversity metrics, niche theory, landscape genomics, and fauna monitoring. He works in the conservation of Amazonian biodiversity, applying statistical methods and habitat connectivity models, and integrating research groups in conservation and taxonomy.

PhD in Zoology
Alexandre Aleixo holds a PhD in Zoology from Louisiana State University, a master’s degree and a bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences from the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP), and a livre-docência (habilitation) in Evolutionary Biology from the University of Helsinki. He teaches in graduate programs at the Emílio Goeldi Museum of Pará (MPEG) and the Federal University of Pará (UFPA). As a leader of the Environmental Genomics group at ITV DS, he works in zoology and animal genetics, with an emphasis on biogeography, evolution, molecular systematics, and taxonomy of Neotropical vertebrates, and has published more than 350 scientific papers.
