A partnership between the Hydro Fund and Vale Institute of Technology (ITV), the initiative is aimed at developing and applying innovative methodologies for biodiversity conservation in the mining sector. The proposal is in line with global and corporate sustainability commitments, such as the No Net Loss target.
The collaboration between Hydro and ITV is intended to generate technical and scientific knowledge to support the implementation of the Impact Mitigation Hierarchy (IMH), a set of guidelines designed to prevent, minimize, restore, and compensate for environmental impacts. The focus of the study is the area of Mineração Paragominas S.A. (MPSA), in the state of Pará, with potential for replication in other mining projects in Brazil.
Faced with the global scenario of declining biodiversity, the initiative proposes combining nature conservation with business practices. Although mining is essential to economic development, it also poses significant risks to biodiversity. In this context, the union between science and practice provided by the partnership aims to fill technical gaps, support more effective environmental decision-making, reduce operational risks, and strengthen corporate reputation.
