The project uses advanced technologies to improve the forecasting of extreme weather events and reduce the operational and social impacts associated with these occurrences. The initiative arose from the installation, in 2021, of an X-Band weather radar in the Carajás Urban Center (PA) to minimize false red alerts and improve safety in Vale’s operations.
With a range of up to 150 km and scans every 5 minutes, the radar provides high-resolution atmospheric data, which is essential for the development of very short-term forecasting models based on artificial intelligence and machine learning. These models are able to identify, with precision and agility, atmospheric patterns that directly impact operational areas, which enables more assertive and safer decisions. The researchers also intend to develop models capable of mapping areas at risk of landslides.
