Development of an online analysis and monitoring system for water quality in dams and water dynamics in the area of influence of the Vermelho River over the EFC

The project monitors the hydrology, hydrometeorology, and hydrosedimentology of the Itacaiúnas River Basin (BHRI), with an emphasis on the sub-basins within this territory.
Since 2014, the project has operated a network of 26 hydrometeorological stations, 23 of which are maintained by ITV DS and 3 by the National Water Agency (ANA), with a density compatible with World Meteorological Organization (WMO) standards. These stations automatically collect and transmit in real-time data on rainfall, river levels, solar radiation, temperature, relative humidity, barometric pressure, and wind direction and speed, using satellite technology (GOES) and cellular networks (GSM). In addition, monitoring is complemented by field campaigns at 23 strategic locations, including 10 fluviometric stations that continuously measure flow and water levels in the basin’s main rivers and tributaries.

Based on this data collection, researchers are able to understand the hydrological cycle of the BHRI, predict extreme events such as floods and droughts, and support mitigation measures and environmental planning. Knowledge of the Itacaiúnas basin, a strategic region for Vale and the state of Pará, is essential for water resources management, environmental impact prevention, and climate change adaption.
