Social and Environmental Business

The project supports Vale’s Forestry Goal, which aims to protect 400,000 and restore 100,000 hectares by 2050, focusing on the cocoa production chain, a crop with high economic and social value for the Amazon region, and which represents a strategic link between agroforestry, bioeconomy, and ecological restoration.

The researchers are seeking to identify key cocoa pollinators and management strategies to increase productivity in agroforestry systems and promote more sustainable agricultural practices, as well as investigating fermentation with the aim of proposing improvements to the process – which would add value to the final product, benefiting local farmers with the production of high-quality chocolate. The project also has the mission of mapping challenges and opportunities in the cocoa chain and providing technical support for forest restoration based on climatic and seasonal data.

The project is a continuation of the “Cocoa: pollination, fermentation, and bioeconomy” initiative (2020-2024), with a larger scope and impact on four thematic axes, which are: cocoa pollination; fermentation of cocoa beans; socioeconomics and bioeconomics of cocoa; and forest restoration on rural properties.

By bringing together science, conservation, and local development, the Socio-Environmental Businesses project reinforces Vale’s commitment to sustainability, ecological restoration, and the promotion of a more inclusive and regenerative economy in the Amazon.
