The project aims to continuously estimate carbon stocks and annual flows of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and removals associated with changes in land use and cover in Vale’s areas of interest. The proposal is in line with the company’s climate targets, which include a 33% reduction in emissions by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2050.
The project covers an initial area of approximately 1.5 million hectares spread over five countries – Brazil, Mozambique, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Canada – and considers both emissions from deforestation and removals through forest regeneration and reforestation. The initiative gathers data from remote sensing, forest inventories, soil analysis, and spatial modeling.
The continuous inventory of carbon emissions and removals in the areas under Vale’s responsibility is essential to guarantee transparency, traceability, and effectiveness in the company’s mitigation actions.
